On (Monday,) August 1, 2022, the Japan Patent Office (JPO), in cooperation with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), hosted online the “11th Japan-China-Korea Design Forum -Design protection in the global economy and Web 3.0-”. Approximately 250 participants attended the forum, including users of design systems in three member countries; Japan, China and South Korea.
At the Welcome Address, JPO commissioner HAMANO, a representative of the host office, mentioned issues including; significance of discussing how design protection should contribute to the utilization of design among the three member countries, Japan, China and South Korea, which account for more than 60% of the world's design applications, and his expectations for presentations at this forum.

In the session 1, under the theme of “Expansion of global economic activities”, member offices introduced the latest developments in the Hague system as well as points that users must consider when filing international applications simultaneously in the three member countries.

In the session 2, under the theme of “Description of design creation and protection in Web 3.0”, Mr. MASUDA, Attorney at law, Partner, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, first introduced the legal issues of the Metaverse from a broader perspective. Then, Mr. OONO, General Manager, Intellectual Property Department, General Administration Division, KDDI CORPORATION, Mr. ZHOU, CEO, Hangzhou Bo Le Industrial Design CO.,LTD (China), and Mr. KIM, Head of Evangelism, Unity Technologies Korea (Korea) introduced issues mainly focusing on the description of design creation and protection in images and digital space. Finally, member offices introduced the description of protection under the current system and issues to be considered in the future.

At the Closing Remark, Mr. NONAKA, Director-General of Patent and Design Examination Department of JPO, summarized the presentations made at the forum and delivered his remark that it is essential for Offices in the member countries to share an awareness of issues and further deepen international discussions in response to changes in the environment surrounding design protection.
