From July 25 to 27 and August 4 to 5, 2022, *Examiner Exchange Program was held between the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).
Nine patent examiners from the JPO and eleven from the CNIPA participated in the program.
For the discussions, four technical fields (1. Printing Presses and Printers, 2. Transportation, 3. Environmental Chemistry and 4. Retrieval, Language and Welfare Systems) were selected in consideration of the development status of above technical fields in China, the technical fields where the CNIPA’s Patent Examination Guidelines continue to be revised, needs for examination practices and number of patent applications. Through the discussions, participants deepened their understanding of the examination practices of both Offices in the corresponding technical fields.
This time, the program was held online, introducing an interval of one week. This allowed the examiners from both Offices to efficiently sort out issues and prepare answers to the questions raised in the session, resulting in more meaningful discussions.
The JPO will continue to cooperate on patent examination with the patent Offices of other countries.
*The Examiner Exchange Program is designed to foster a relationship of trust and deepen mutual understanding between the examiners of the JPO and overseas IP Offices through discussions on each other's prior art search methods and examination practices, and to promote mutual use of prior art search results and examination results.
