“Judicial Symposium on Intellectual Property / TOKYO 2022 - IP Dispute Resolution in Japan, the United States, and Europe -” Held

“Judicial Symposium on Intellectual Property / TOKYO 2022 - IP Dispute Resolution in Japan, the United States, and Europe -” was held from Thursday, October 27 to Friday, October 28, 2022. It was co-hosted by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Supreme Court, the Intellectual Property High Court, the Ministry of Justice, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, and the Intellectual Property Lawyers Network Japan.
This symposium has been held annually since 2017 with the aim of deepening mutual understanding of judicial systems for intellectual property in participating countries. It was held face-to-face for the first time in three years.

JPO part of the program on Friday, October 28, 2022 consisted of remarks by Mr. HAMANO Koichi, Commissioner of the JPO, followed by lectures by Mr. YASUDA Futoshi, Director-General, Trial and Appeal Department (TAD), the JPO, Scott R. Boalick, Chief Administrative Patent Judge, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and Dr. Ingo Beckedorf, Chairman of a Technical Board of Appeal, European Patent Office (EPO) on the themes of the “Current state of trials and appeals” and “Invalidation and opposition systems in patents at each IP office”. In addition, a panel discussion was held on the theme of “International Comparison of Judgments on Correction Requirements based on Hypothetical Cases” with the participation of Mr. YASUDA Futoshi, Director-General of the TAD, the JPO, as moderator, Ms. TAMURA Kiyoko, Executive Chief Administrative Judge of the TAD, the JPO, Mr. Michael P. Tierney, Acting Deputy Chief Administrative Patent Judge of the PTAB, USPTO, and Dr. Ingo Beckedorf, Chairman of a Technical Board of Appeal, EPO, as panelists.
