Holding Discussion Utilizing Intellectual Property with IP Offices in the Arab Region

On January 31-February 1, 2023, The Third Session of Asian-Arab IP Dialogue between Japan and selected Arab countries was held in Egypt (Cairo) with the aim of sharing knowledge and exchanging views in the field of intellectual property between Japan and the Arab region. Mr. KATSURA Masanori, JPO Deputy Commissioner, attended the Dialogue meeting.

This dialogue was jointly organized by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Japan Patent Office (JPO), and the League of Arab States* with the support of financing from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global, a voluntary contribution made by the JPO to the WIPO. Representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, the Arab League, and sub-regional organizations including the Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office (GCCPO) and Gulf Cooperation Council-IP Training Center(GCC-IPTC) from the Arab region participated in this meeting.
Each country and organization made presentations on their recent efforts and exchanged views themed around "Utilizing the Intellectual Property System for Economic, Social, and Cultural Development in the Digital Era”.

The JPO made a presentation on the initiatives on the examination of AI-related inventions and measures to support SMEs, and shared experiences of Japan. Through the dialogue, the participants reaffirmed the significance of sharing and deepened mutual understanding of issues to be addressed by each country and organization in the Arab region.
The JPO will continue to promote cooperation with the Arab region in the field of intellectual property in order to create an environment that ensures the prompt, smooth, and appropriate protection of intellectual property in the Arab region.
