The Japan Patent Office (JPO) held a seminar on February 15 for officials of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) on the topic of bad faith trademark filings. The seminar was part of the “Bad Faith Trademark Project*” led by the JPO within the framework of the Five Trademark Offices (TM5), consisting of trademark offices in Japan, the United States, Europe, China, and Korea.
During the seminar, participants exchanged information with regard to an overview of the Bad Faith Trademark Project, as well as the TM5 Offices' and IPOPHL’s initiatives against bad faith trademark filings. In addition to asking numerous questions of the TM5 Offices, IPOPHL stated that it is important to continue such initiatives in order to prevent bad faith trademark filings. Consequently, IPOPHL and the TM5 Offices were able to confirm their shared understanding with regard to the importance of taking initiatives against such filings.
Going forward, the JPO will continue to raise awareness of bad faith trademark filings, and will also work to further improve the environments within which trademark rights can be appropriately protected in individual countries.
* TM5 Offices aim to exchange information on their respective laws, regulations, and operational practices with regard to bad faith trademark filings, as well as to provide users with information in this regard.
