JPO Participates in the Five Trademark Offices (TM5) Mid-Term Meeting

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) participated in the Five Trademark Offices (TM5) Mid-Term Meeting, which was held in Singapore on May 15, 2023.

During this meeting, each lead office reported on the progress of the 15 TM5 cooperative projects that are currently underway, while also discussing the future goals of TM5 and how such projects should be undertaken in the future, and deliberating on two newly proposed projects.

The JPO made presentations and led the discussions on the three projects which the JPO is leading among the 15 TM5 cooperative projects, which are those in the areas of User Involvement*1, Bad Faith Trademark*2, and IT Support for Trademark Examination*3.

The JPO also proposed to hold another seminar in an ASEAN country to share the results of TM5 initiatives with other IP offices regarding the Bad Faith Trademark Project, which received endorsement from all TM5 offices. In addition, an expert meeting on IT Support for Trademark Examination Project was also confirmed, and is scheduled to be held in June 2023.

The 12th TM5 Annual Meeting to review the year’s activities will be held in Incheon, Korea from September 11th to 13th , 2023.

Through the TM5 initiatives, the JPO will continue to help promote the appropriate protection and utilization of trademark rights.

*1 The User Involvement Project led jointly with the EUIPO. The JPO leads TM5 joint workshops in cooperation with the International Trademark Association (INTA) to disseminate information to users.

*2 The Bad Faith Trademark Project aims to exchange information on their respective laws, regulations and operational practices with regard to the bad faith trademark filings, as well as to provide users with information in this regard.
