Training course for promoting startup was conducted for staff of Cambodian universities and Cambodian intellectual property office

September 28, 2023

For four days from September 19 to 22, 2023, a training course for promoting university-launched startups was conducted in the Japan Patent Office (JPO) for the staff involved in technology transfer and other activities at Cambodian universities and the Ministry of Industry, Science and Innovation (MISTI).

This training course was conducted as part of an intellectual property awareness project for universities and startups in Cambodia*1 based on a memorandum of cooperation signed by the JPO, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)*2, and MISTI in March this year.

6 trainees from Cambodia participated in the training, made a courtesy call to HAMANO Koichi, Commissioner of the JPO. A JPO expert in charge of startup support introduced JPO initiatives for supporting startups and case studies. 6 lecturers from Japanese universities, law firms, and startup company managers shared their knowledge on how to protect the results of research and development with intellectual property, and the challenges faced in running a startup business. There were lively question and answer session in every lecture.

The JPO received positive feedback from the trainees, including the following comments: “I learned a wealth of knowledge about IP and startups with examples,” and “it was interesting to hear experts in various fields sharing their experiences.”

The JPO will continue to offer support and cooperation in this area by conducting training programs for emerging countries such as Cambodia and by cooperating with ERIA, thereby helping to develop and strengthen the intellectual property environment in each country.
