JPO-DPMA Bilateral Meeting Held

October 17, 2023

Japan Patent Office (JPO) Commissioner HAMANO Koichi visited the DPMA (German Patent and Trade Mark Office) in Munich, Germany on October 2, 2023, and held a meeting with DPMA President Eva Schewior.

The meeting included discussions regarding continued cooperation between JPO and DPMA, in particular the Examiner Exchange Program*, the impacts and prospects for the Unitary Patent System and the Unified Patent Court, and the Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI). Both offices also confirmed their intention to strengthen further cooperation in the future.

* The Examiner Exchange Program is designed to foster a relationship of trust and deepen mutual understanding between the examiners of the JPO and overseas IP offices through discussions on each other's prior art search methods and examination practices, as well as to promote the mutual use of results for both prior art searches and examinations. JPO and DPMA began this program in 2000, and have continued to engage in cooperative activities in order to deepen understanding of each other’s examination practices for more than 20 years.
