JPO Conducts Design-Training Program for DGIP Examiners on the Board of Appeal System for Design

January 18, 2024

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) conducted an online design training program on January 10, 2024 for members of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, Government of Indonesia (DGIP), together with support from both JICA and JETRO Singapore.

The training program was led by a JPO administrative judge in charge of operations for the trial and appeal system in the design field. Around 37 design examiners attended from the DGIP.

During the program, the trainer shared his knowledge and experiences with the trainees, including an overview and an introduction to the trial and appeal system in the design field in Japan. Two speakers from the DGIP next gave an overview of amendments to the Indonesian industrial design law and introduced the Indonesian examination system in the industrial design field. Afterwards, a lively question and answer session was held. The JPO received positive feedback from the trainees, including comments such as the following: "The lecture was useful for understanding the flow of the trials and appeals process for design in Japan," and "The lecture helped to prepare for the establishment of a design appeal board in Indonesia."

The JPO will continue to offer support and cooperation in this area by conducting training programs for emerging countries such as Indonesia—thereby helping to improve and strengthen their intellectual property environments.
