The Japan Patent Office (JPO), in collaboration with the ASEAN IP Academy*1, conducted an online design training program on February 19 and 20, 2024 for staff members of the ASEAN IP offices.
The training program was led by JPO design examiners who is highly experienced in design examination. Around 70 design examiners attended from ASEAN IP offices.
During the program, the trainers shared their respective knowledge and experiences in the field of design. One trainer talked about recent trends in Japanese Design System and Japan’s experience in the accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement concerning the International Registration of Designs. The other trainer shared his knowledge of the JPO’s examination guidelines, operating procedures in relation to graphic images. Afterwards, a lively question and answer session was held.
The JPO received positive feedback from the trainees, including comments such as the following: “This training was very useful for our future consideration of accession to the Hague Agreement.” and “The examination procedures in Japan regarding designs containing images is helpful in making decisions.”
The JPO will continue to offer support and cooperation in this area by conducting training programs for IP professionals in emerging countries—thereby helping to improve and strengthen their intellectual property environments.
