The Japan Patent Office (JPO) held a trademark expert meeting with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) *1 on March 5 and 6, 2024.
During this meeting, information was exchanged on the latest developments in both offices. The EUIPO showed great interest in the latest revision of the Trademark Act in Japan, and a lively exchange of views was held regarding the efforts of the two offices to utilize new technologies such as AI within the trademark field. We also discussed the collaborative projects*2 within the framework of the Five Trademark Offices (TM5), which include the Offices in Japan, the United States, Europe, China and Korea, that the JPO will host this year. Herein, we were able to enhance mutual understanding concerning the direction of future cooperation.
The JPO will continue to cooperate with the EUIPO to make the trademark systems of the two offices more user-friendly.
*1The EUIPO is a regional intellectual property office with functions such as granting rights to European Union trademarks and to registered community designs within the European Union, as well as monitoring intellectual property infringements.
*2TM5 promotes international cooperation in the field of trademarks through projects related to the initiatives agreed upon by the five offices. The JPO is leading the "Bad-faith Trademark Project" and the " IT Support for Trademark Examination Project", and is additionally co-leading the "User Association Involvement Project" together with the EUIPO.
