The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the Institute of Science Tokyo co-hosted the Trilateral Patent Office Director and Users Meeting International Symposium:42nd Trilateral Conference International Symposium ~IP and Technology Transfer: Challenges and Successes with the Collaboration Framework among Academia-Industry-IP Offices~ on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 in Tokyo.
This symposium was also supported by the European Patent Office (EPO), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as well as by user groups in Japan, the U.S. and Europe-—namely the Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA), American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), and Business Europe (BE).
This symposium was held with the purpose of discussing the diverse realities of intellectual property management in the process of transferring technology born within universities to the industrial sector, from the respective positions of industry, government, and academia in Japan, the U.S. and Europe.
Following opening remarks from Commissioner ONO of the JPO, a keynote speech was given by Dr. OHTAKE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Science Tokyo, from the perspective of academia on the creation of innovation and the contributions toward solving social issues through the effective use of intellectual property.
In the first panel discussion afterward, which was moderated by Dr. IIDA, Vice President for Industry-Academia government Collaboration(Science Tokyo), views were shared by Mr. ONO, Commissioner(JPO), Ms. Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director(USPTO), Dr. NAKAUCHI, Distinguished Professor(Science Tokyo), and Ms. Wainikka, Senior IP Adviser(BE) regarding efforts to encourage the social implementation of academic technology through startups.
In the second panel discussion, which was moderated by Dr. OSHIMA, Vice President for Industry-Academia government Collaboration (Science Tokyo), current efforts by IP management toward an innovation ecosystem were introduced by Mr. Campinos, President (EPO), Ms. Jorgenson, Deputy Director General of Patents and Technology(WIPO), Mr. WAKASHIRO, Vice President(JIPA), Mr. Anastasi, First Vice President(AIPLA), and Mr. Staudt, Past President(IPO) with respect to their respective countries.
The symposium ended with a forward-looking closing address from Dr. TANAKA, President and Chief Academic Officer of Science Tokyo, which aspires to fulfill the role of a hub connecting startups and companies in the future to “create new value”, which is also the new university philosophy.
