Active cooperation with Africa reaffirmed during the Administrative Council of OAPI

The 64th session of the Administrative Council1 of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) 2 was held on December 13, 2024 in Bangui, the Central African Republic, at which time a video message by Mr. YASUDA Futoshi, Deputy Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), was shown during the opening session.

Mr. YASUDA expressed his belief that in order to solve today's social problems and promote economic development, it is important to properly protect new innovations through the IP system, as well as to create an environment wherein IP rights can be utilized. In addition, he expressed JPO's commitment to continue working with OAPI to strengthen the foundation of the IP system in Africa.

The JPO will continue to develop and improve an environment wherein the IP rights are promptly and smoothly secured and appropriately protected in Africa. To do so, the JPO will continue promoting cooperation with IP offices in African countries.

*1 The Administrative Council is a body wherein the heads of the IP offices in OAPI member countries gather to discuss OAPI’s action plans and policies.

*2 OAPI is a regional IP organization comprising 17 mainly French-speaking member countries.
