On December 12, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) hosted the 10th Annual Meeting of the Industrial Design Five Offices (ID5), which are the IP offices of Japan, the United States, Europe, China, and South Korea, in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, with WIPO as an observer. Commissioner Mr. ONO and Director-General of the First Examination Department, Mr. NONAKA attended the Annual Meeting as representatives of the JPO.
During the meeting, the ID5 partners recognized the importance of new challenges regarding designs due to the development of new technologies such as the metaverse and generative AI. We confirmed our commitment to continue cooperation on these matters.
Additionally, discussions were held to review the outcomes and future directions of the ten existing cooperative projects, including two led by the JPO.
Furthermore, the "Challenges for design system posed by new technologies" project newly proposed by the JPO, and the "Informative User Guide for the Digital design Application" project newly proposed by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) / the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), were adopted.
On the following day, December 13, the ID5 User Session was held both in-person and online for design system users, including domestic and international industry associations and patent attorney associations. In addition to reports from each office on the latest policy developments, user representatives from various countries gave presentations and exchanged opinions on the theme "Contemporary aspects of Design - AI, infringement on the Internet, etc. - "
It was agreed that the 2025 ID5 meeting will be hosted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The JPO will continue to advance the initiatives of the ID5 to create an environment where Japan's excellent designs can be more appropriately protected and utilized worldwide.
