Global Patent Office Heads Discuss IP Strategies for Innovative Economic Development
- Outcome of the 18th IP5 Heads of Office Meeting –

The IP5 Offices, which consist of the Patent Offices in Japan, Europe, Korea, China, and the U.S., held their 18th IP5 Heads of Office Meeting on May 28, 2025 in Tianjin, China. The meeting was hosted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), with WIPO as an observer. Mr. ONO Yota, JPO Commissioner, was in attendance at the meeting.

The IP5 discussion focused on strategies to promote the utilization and commercialization of intellectual property (IP) in order to effectively support innovative development of the economy, as well as cooperation by IP5 Offices in this regard. The meeting additionally explored future cooperation, covering new emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (NET/AI), along with the modernization of tools to support patent examination, while acknowledging ongoing cooperation in the field of NET/AI.

A meeting of the IP5 Heads of Office with IP5 Industry was also held on the same day, where views were exchanged on strengthening cooperation to promote economic growth through IP.
