The Japan Patent Office (JPO) participated in the 147th Annual Meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA)*1, which was held from May 18 to 21 in San Diego, California in the United States. The meeting is one of the largest trademark events bringing together intellectual property experts from across the globe, with this year's meeting attracting more than 10,000 participants from 140 countries.
As part of the TM5*2 project*3 led by the JPO, a workshop was held during the meeting on the theme "Acquired Distinctiveness through Use regarding Three Dimensional Trademarks", where presentations were given by each of the TM5 offices.
Additionally, during the INTA- hosted session titled "Updates by IP Offices from the Asia Pacific", the JPO gave a presentation on the latest JPO developments such as efforts to improve the efficiency of trademark examinations and quality management.
The JPO also exhibited a booth throughout the event under the theme "Protect your brand. No bad faith trademarks!", wherein we introduced measures for dealing with bad faith trademark applications, as well as cross-governmental and public-private anti-counterfeiting initiatives in Japan. Additionally, the JPO distributed brochures for the EXPO 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan, and introduced flyers for the JPO exhibition titled "The Power of Intellectual Property builds tomorrow. -Delivering your passion, making our world a better place-", which will be held from October 2 to 10, 2025. More than 1,300 people visited the booth, including attorneys and patent attorneys specializing in trademarks from 82 countries and regions. Many asked questions about trademark administration and practices in Japan, while others intently compared genuine and counterfeit products.
The JPO will continue to participate actively in international public-private sector exchange events to promote our policies and systems, and we will also continue striving to create an environment that facilitates the appropriate protection and utilization of Japanese companies' intellectual properties overseas.
