WIPO Assemblies 2025 Begins

A delegation from Japan including Japan Patent Office (JPO) Commissioner Mr. KASAI Yasuyuki, and Deputy Commissioner Mr. YASUDA Futoshi, is attending the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which began on July 8 in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the opening session, JPO Commissioner KASAI delivered a General Statement on behalf of Japan, wherein he mentioned that the JPO welcomes the Global Entrepreneur Empowerment Program（GEEP）and IP Management Clinic（IPMC）in the area of WIPO’s initiatives to support developing countries. In addition, he noted that the JPO and WIPO agreed to strengthen collaboration for supporting SMEs in developing countries, as well as cooperating in global initiatives.

Commissioner KASAI also mentioned that the JPO recognizes the transformative impact of frontier technologies on IP systems, particularly AI, and that Japan is actively conducting domestic consultation in this area while participating in WIPO’s discussions on these important topics.

Moreover, he mentioned that IP has played a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and achieving the SDGs, and also noted that the JPO is expanding its initiatives regarding WIPO GREEN, including through the FIT Japan IP global. Additionally, in conjunction with EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, the JPO will host an international forum aiming to spread the vision of promoting IP utilization for solving social issues.

The meetings will run through July 17, and discussions will be conducted on the various reports, budgets, and activities of the respective committees.
