The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) co-hosted a follow-up seminar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on November 12, 2025, on the theme of "Examination Guidelines on Acquired Distinctiveness and Non-Traditional Trademarks in the Atlantic-Pacific Axis". The seminar was attended by approximately 80 intellectual property stakeholders from the INPI, law firms, and representatives from universities and research institutions.
In Brazil, a regulatory amendment regarding "Acquired Distinctiveness" is set to take effect on November 28, and the examination manual is currently being revised. As a result, this seminar was highly valued for its practical content and the subsequent active discussions.
Additionally, this seminar was also held as a commemorative event for the "Japan-Brazil Friendship Exchange Year," which marks the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil, symbolizing the long-standing friendship and cooperative relationship between the two countries.
The JPO will continue to support the development and improvement of intellectual property systems in Brazil and other countries so as to create an environment that ensures the prompt and smooth acquisition and appropriate protection of intellectual property rights.
