The JPO held a two-day trademark experts meeting together with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)*1 in Alicante, Spain, on March 4-5, 2026.
During the meeting, information was exchanged on the use of AI technologies and quality management with respect to trademark examination.
Also discussed were cooperative matters between the two offices, and collaborative projects within the framework of the Five Trademark Offices (TM5)*2, which consists of those in Japan, the United States, Europe, China and Korea. Herein, we were able to enhance mutual understanding concerning the direction of future initiatives.
The JPO will continue to cooperate with the EUIPO to make the trademark systems of the two offices more user-friendly.
*1: The EUIPO is a regional intellectual property office with functions such as granting rights to European Union trademarks and to registered community designs within the European Union, as well as monitoring intellectual property infringement.
*2: TM5 promotes international cooperation in the field of trademarks through projects related to the initiatives agreed upon by the five offices. The JPO is leading the "Bad-faith Trademark Project", the "IT Support for Trademark Examination Project", and the "User Involvement Project".
