The Japan Patent Office (JPO) participated in the 148th Annual Meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA) *1, which was held between May 2 and 6 in London, England. The meeting is one of the largest global trademark events with this year's meeting attracting more than 10,000 intellectual property experts from 145 countries.
As part of the JPO-led TM5*2 project*3, a workshop was held on the theme of “Comparison of Composite Marks in a Likelihood of Confusion Analysis”, during which presentations were given by each of the TM5 offices.
During the INTA-hosted session “Asia Pacific IP Pulse: Insights from the Region's Key IP Offices”, the JPO gave a presentation on its latest developments such as IP statistics and AI initiatives.
The JPO also exhibited a booth on the theme of “File your TM with JPO to utilize your brands!”, wherein display panels explaining the attractiveness of the Japan market, characteristics of trademark examination at the JPO, various types of trademarks, including non-traditional trademarks, protected in Japan and their registration examples were exhibited. More than 1,000 people visited the booth, including attorneys and patent attorneys specializing in trademarks, and many asked questions about trademark administration and practices in Japan.
The JPO will continue to participate actively in international public-private sector exchange events to promote the JPO's policies and systems, while continuing to strive to create an environment that facilitates the appropriate protection and utilization of Japanese companies' intellectual properties in other countries.
