Automatically created and assigned classification "GAIA-Index"

The JPO is currently conducting a proof‑of‑concept trial for the operational introduction of the AI‑driven automatically created and assigned classification the “GAIA‑Index”(GAIA：Generative AI-based Architecture). Beginning in April 2026, the GAIA‑Index created and assigned on a trial basis for several selected themes will become searchable on J‑PlatPat in the form of F‑terms.

Traditionally, patent classifications such as IPC, FI, and F‑terms have been revisioned and assigned manually. In contrast, the GAIA‑Index is characterized by automatic creation and assignment, which has the potential to reduce inconsistencies in assignment and enable more rapid response to changes in technological trends.

The JPO plans to continue improving the creation and assignment methods and to expand the range of target themes. Newly added and updated GAIA‑Index data will be reflected on J‑PlatPat as they become available. Additions and revisions to the GAIA‑Index will be carried out every April, and the updated F‑term‑formatted indexes will be incorporated into search platforms, such as J‑PlatPat, as they become available.

How to use GAIA-Index

The method for searching the GAIA-Index in the Patent/Utility Model Search (Selective Input) of J-PlatPat is as follows. You may also perform the search using Logical Expression Input.

(1) When using the Search options

1. In the Search options, specify a main theme that includes a GAIA‑Index (e.g., 3D131).
2. Set the Search item of the Search keyword to "F-term."
3. Enter the GAIA-Index search key (e.g., OA01) as the F-term and execute the search.

(2) When not using the Search options

1. Set the search field of the search keyword to "F-term."
2. Enter both the F-term and the GAIA-Index search key together (e.g., 3D131OA01) and execute the search.
