The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association agreed by the recognition that it would be contributed to timely obtain of a trademark right for both applicants in Japan and Taiwan, if they create and publish a concordance list of similar group codes that are used in trademark examination in Japan and Taiwan, respectively, in a way to show the corresponding relationship between the respective similar group codes (Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes) (Link to the website of The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association ( External link ) ) .

Responding to this agreement, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) decided to take responsibility of creating the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes based on the mission that Japan should provide support and collaboration for The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association to the possible extent within the scope of Japan’s national law.

Similar group codes are the codes assigned to goods and services that are presumed to be similar to each other in trademark examination, and therefore classified into a group. The Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes aims to improve the predictability of examination results, by encouraging users who file trademark applications with the JPO or the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) to utilize this List when searching for the existence of already registered trademarks.

Having the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes completed, the JPO is pleased to publish the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes corresponding to Nice Classification, 11th edition, version 2022 (NCL11-2022) (effective on January 1, 2022).

• Class: Class to which goods or services belong
• Basic No: Unique No. of goods and services given to the goods and services in the International Classification
• EN - Goods and Services NCL(11-2022): Indication of goods and services in English listed in NCL(11-2022)
• Acceptable or not by the JPO:
  • ○ = Indication of goods and services acceptable by JPO
  • × = Indication of goods and services not acceptable by JPO
• Japanese Translation: Translations in Japanese for goods and services corresponding to the NCL(11-2022)
• JPO’s similar group code: Similar group codes assigned to goods and services by JPO
