Publication of Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes(Corresponding to Nice Classification 13th edition, version 2026 (NCL13-2026))

The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association reached a shared recognition that creating and publishing a concordance list of similar group codes—showing the corresponding relationships between the codes used respectively in trademark examination in Japan and Taiwan—would contribute to the timely acquisition of trademark rights by applicants in both Japan and Taiwan (link to the website of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (external link)).

In response to this recognition, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) decided to take responsibility for creating the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes, based on the mission that Japan should provide support and cooperation to the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association to the extent possible within the scope of Japan’s national laws.

Similar group codes are the codes assigned to goods and services that are presumed to be similar to each other in trademark examination. The Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes aims to improve the predictability of examination results, by encouraging users who file trademark applications with the JPO or the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) to utilize the concordance list when searching for prior trademarks.

As the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes has been completed, the JPO is pleased to publish the Japan-Taiwan Concordance List of Similar Group Codes corresponding to the Nice Classification, 13th edition, version 2026 (NCL13-2026), which came into effect on January 1, 2026.

  A unique six-digit identification number assigned to goods and services in the Nice Classification
