On May 16, 2017, the delegates of the Trial and Appeal Department of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), headed by Mr. Ryuichi Kubo, Director of the Board of Trial and Appeal of the JPO, visited the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office (BoA), having a meeting to exchange opinions in the field of appeals.
The European Patent Office (EPO) made a comprehensive reform of the BoA to strengthen the perception of the BoA's independence and to improve their efficiency in 2016. This is the first time the Trial and Appeal Department of the JPO and the BoA have a meeting to exchange opinions after the reform. Furthermore, for the first time, Mr. Carl Josefsson, appointed as the first President of the BoA on March 1, 2017, had an opportunity to exchange opinions with an organization abroad.
The JPO will continue to be actively involved in exchanges of views with international community, making efforts for conducting productive proceedings and increasing an awareness of systems of the JPO based on the opinions obtained through international exchange of opinions.
