The JPO conducted the "JPO/IPR Training Course on Trial and Appeal System" from January 16 to January 21, 2025. The course was designed for individuals who are or will be involved with appeal and trial systems at IP offices. A total of 18 trainees from 11 countries completed the course.
The course aimed to deepen the attendees understanding of appeal and trial systems, and to develop human resources who can help establish and improve such systems in their own countries. During the course, the trainees learned the outline of the appeal and trial systems in Japan. The participants were divided into two groups to conduct case studies: one for patents, and the other for trademarks. They attended lectures on appeal and trial systems from the perspective of users, and held active discussions about the systems and the operating procedures of appeals and trials in their respective countries.
Trainees' comments regarding the course included the following:
" The lecture provided a detailed overview of Japan's trial and appeal system, which was clear and easy to understand ", " I am grateful for the opportunity to directly hear a patent attorney's perspective through the lecture given by the expert from an intellectual property law firm.
