The JPO conducted the "JPO/IPR Training Course on Substantive Examination of Trademarks" from February 13-21, 2025. A total of 19 participants from 16 countries completed the course, which was designed for IP officials engaged in trademark examination in their respective countries.
This course was designed to deepen understanding of examination guidelines and practice-related expertise, as well as to enhance required professional skills for trademark examiners. Lectures on trademark legislation, examination guidelines, quality control, and experience/ knowledge of substantive examinations in Japan were presented, and participants were able to deepen their understanding through case studies and discussions based on actual applications.
The trainees' comments regarding the course included the following:
"I was able to learn more about the JPO's similarity examination standards and exchanged opinions with participants from other countries. This broadened my perspective and enhanced my understanding of various examination approaches."
"It was helpful in understanding Japan's excellent trademark system. This is very important for proposing reforms in my country's digitalization, advanced examination, trademarks, and quality assurance. The information was beneficial in advocating for the enhancement of my country's trademark examination capabilities."
