JPO Conducts JPO/IPR Training Course on Trial and Appeal Systems

The JPO conducted the "JPO/IPR Training Course on Trial and Appeal Systems", which was held from February 12 to 18, 2026. A total of 18 trainees from 11 countries completed the course, which was designed for individuals who are or will be involved with appeal and trial systems at IP offices.

The course aimed to deepen attendees’ understanding of appeal and trial systems, and to develop human resources who can help establish and improve such systems in their own countries. During the course, the trainees learned general information regarding the appeal and trial systems in Japan. They were divided into two groups to conduct case studies: one for patents, and the other for trademarks. They also attended lectures on appeal and trial systems from the perspective of users, and held active discussions regarding the systems and operating procedures of appeals and trials in their respective countries.

Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:

" In addition to detailed and systematic explanations, I was able to gain a clear understanding of the Japanese judicial system and the appeals process through practical examples of litigation and trial procedures."

" Based on the knowledge gained from this training course, I aim to contribute toward improving the effectiveness of intellectual property practices and administration in my country—particularly in the near future—through the revision of intellectual property laws and the implementation of a national intellectual property strategy.”
