Report

The JPO held two seminars in Viet Nam in October, one in Hanoi on Oct. 8th and another in Ho Chi Minh City on Oct. 10th. The theme of these seminars was “IPRs Protection and Enforcement in Industry 4.0”. In total there were approximately 220 attendees, including many from the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam (IP Viet Nam), patent attorneys and IP related persons from universities and research institutes, as well as former participants of the JPO training courses held in Japan.

The seminar began with a keynote speech by IP Viet Nam discussing the effects of Industry 4.0 on both the socio-economic development and the IP system of Viet Nam. The JPO then followed with an introduction to the seminar by explaining the current situation of industrial property rights administration in Japan. An IP practitioner from a Japanese company, and a professor from a Japanese university, then gave lectures on the strategic protection and utilization of IP to accommodate Industry 4.0, as well as the Japanese efforts in enforcement of IP rights in the digital environment. Vietnamese lecturers from IP Viet Nam as well as law firms then addressed the challenges and difficulties Industry 4.0 within the current IP system of Viet Nam, such as the enforcement of IP rights in a rapidly expanding e-commerce system. A question and answer session was held following each session, and there were active opinion exchanges between the lecturers and the attendees.

On October 9th in Hanoi, the JPO had a meeting with former participants of our training programs to hear their opinions and gather useful information that will help us in planning future training programs. The JPO look forward to the further success of our former trainees, as well as all IP related professionals in Viet Nam.
