Report

The JPO held a seminar in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on January 15, 2020. The theme of the seminar was “Utilization of the Intellectual Property System for Economic Development”. There were approximately 60 attendees in total, including IP related persons from the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), private companies, law offices, and universities and research institutes, as well as former participants of JPO training courses held in Japan.

The seminar began with a keynote speech given by Dr. Khanlasy, DIP Director General, on the improvement and operation of the intellectual property system in Lao PDR. The JPO then followed with an introduction to the seminar by explaining the current situation of industrial property rights administration in Japan. An expert in IP promotion from the Japanese public sector explained the role of the IPR system in economic development based on the Japan experience, and a Japanese patent attorney discussed trademark protection utilizing the Madrid Protocol, while Lao lecturers from the DIP gave presentations on the role of the IP system in economic development in Lao PDR, as well as the advantages of trademark protection in Lao PDR through the Madrid Protocol. Once all the lectures were completed, an overall discussion was held and there was very active discussion and opinion exchange between the lecturers and attendees.

On January 14^th, the JPO had a meeting with former participants of our training courses to hear their opinions and gather useful information that will help us in planning future training programs. The JPO look forward to the further success of our former trainees, as well as all IP-related professionals in Lao PDR.
