FY2023 Follow-up Seminar in Lao PDR (Program)

Report

On November 7, 2023, the JPO and Lao PDR Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) co-hosted a Follow-up Seminar in Vientiane.

Approximately 40 IP personnel from government agencies, as well as IP professionals from universities, research institutes and private companies, attended the seminar for JPO/IPR training course alumni　from Lao PDR.

On the theme of "Quality Management of Trademark Examination", JPO, Lao PDR DIP, and JETRO Bangkok gave lectures during the seminar which focused on current IP policies in both Japan and Lao PDR, as well as quality management of trademark examinations, and formal and substantive trademarks examinations.

The Laotian speakers explained the IP policies currently being implemented by the DIP, such as the movement for one trademark on a single product and the strengthening of GI protection, as well as details of formality examination procedures for trademarks using the IPAS system. Such explanations enabled us to understand the current improvements being implemented with regard to the IP environment and the efficiency of examination operations.

The Japanese speakers also explained the JPO's current efforts, including subsidies for filling foreign applications and the Anti-Counterfeiting Campaign. In addition, the speakers divided the JPO's main efforts in quality management of trademark examinations into three main pillars: (1) quality assurance, (2) quality verification, and (3) external evaluation on quality control. He then introduced the specific efforts being made under each pillar.

Through these initiatives, the JPO will contribute toward continuous, self-sustaining development and improvement of the IP environment in Lao PDR.
