JPO Conducted JPO/IPR Training Course on Academia-Industry Collaboration and Technology Transfer

The JPO conducted the “JPO/IPR Training Course on Academia - Industry Collaboration and Technology Transfer" online from August 3 to August 30, 2022. A total of 24 trainees from 15 countries participated in the course are intended for the IP Offices and ministries in charge of technology development, staff of universities and research institutes involved in IP management and utilization including promotion of industry-academia-government collaboration and technology transfer, and instruction and support for these activities, as well as personnel in charge of IP in companies.

The purpose of this course is to learn efficient and effective IP management methods in universities and research institutes. The trainees shared the current status and challenges of IP policies and strategies in their countries, deepened their understanding through lectures and discussions on IP management, industry-academia-government collaboration, and technology transfer methods to the private sector.

Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:

“It was very practical to learn the methods for Japanese universities to manage intellectual property and transfer technology in an efficient and win-win manner. Thanks to this, I was able to obtain suggestions on how to improve initiatives by the IP office and institutions in my country.”

“While the training course was being held, I had the opportunity to conduct a consultation for academia and educators in my country. At this time, I provided support using the knowledge I had gained from the course, which was very well-received. I would like to actively support my colleagues with the knowledge I had gained from the course when they hold similar consultations in the future.”

“The sharing of Japan's practical experiences, such as evaluating the value of IP assets, was very helpful. Currently, the IP office of my country is planning a program to disseminate and raise awareness regarding the importance of patent search support, licensing, and technology transfer for inventors and universities. I would like to use the knowledge gained from the course toward developing better programs.”
