The JPO conducted the "JPO/IPR Training Course on Patent Examination Management" online from September 1 to 22, 2022. A total of 15 trainees from 10 countries completed the course. This course was mainly intended for managers involved in patent examination management at IP offices in various countries.
The purpose of this course is to enhance the expertise required for practicing patent examination management. During this course, the JPO shared its experiences and the attendees shared their own experiences with the JPO. Then they had discussions with each other. In addition, lectures were given to deepen the attendees’ understanding of overall patent-examination operations, such as how to manage the quality of patent examination and general business-management practices, as well as how to develop human resources, specifically patent examiners.
Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:
“I gained new knowledge on how the JPO manages quality, such as by using check sheets and conducting applicant satisfaction surveys. I believe that all the information in the lectures can be used in my operations.” “Regarding outsourcing prior art searches, by providing more opportunities for the general public to deepen their understanding of patents, our office may also outsource prior art searches, carefully selecting private institutions.”
