The JPO conducted the “JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Patents” in a hybrid format, meaning online and by inviting trainees, from October 19 to November 30, 2022. A total of 18 trainees from 8 countries completed the course. This course was intended for IP lawyers, patent attorneys, and those engaged in patent practices in companies and universities.
The purpose of this course is to deepen the attendees’ understanding of patent practices and to enhance their abilities as experts in IP rights. In order to create an interactive approach, IP experts in Japan provided lectures on how to write patent specifications, as well as lectures on licensing negotiations, dispute resolution, and utilization of patent information, delivering both real-time lectures online and in person.
Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:
“After returning to my country, I would like to use what I learned from the lectures to build a program to raise IP awareness and advance industry-academia collaboration. In particular, I gained new knowledge about how to write patent descriptions and draft licensing agreements. Using this knowledge, I believe I can conduct sessions on these topics to my colleagues.” “I would like to use the knowledge and skills gained from this training course to conduct research and technical monitoring at my university, which specifically are used to conduct prior art searches, write patent descriptions, and evaluate the value of patents.” The JPO received very positive feedback on the course from the practitioners and managers involved in IP.
