JPO Conducted JPO/IPR Training Course on Trial and Appeal System

The JPO conducted the "JPO/IPR Training Course on Trial and Appeal System" in person from November 28 to December 2, 2022. A total of 13 trainees from 9 countries completed the course. This course is designed for individuals who are and will be involved with appeal and trial systems at IP offices.

The course aims to deepen understanding of appeal and trial systems and to develop human resources who can contribute to establishing and improving appeal and trial systems. In the course, the trainees learned the outline of the appeal and trial systems in Japan; and were divided into two groups, one for patents and the other for trademarks, to conduct case studies; and attended lectures on appeal and trial systems from the perspective of users. Also, they held active discussions about the systems and operating procedures of appeals and trials in their respective countries.

Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:

"I would like to introduce the procedures for invalidation and opposition trials in my country." "(In addition to the above) the revocation and correction trials, as well as alternative dispute resolution procedures, were very interesting. I would like to conduct analyses to seek the best method for adaptation in our legal system."

The trainees also expressed interest in judicial research officials who support the judges by providing technical expertise and information.
