The JPO/IPR Training Course on Substantive Examination of Trademarks was held in person from January 12 to January 24, 2023. A total of 19 participants from 12 countries completed the course, which was designed for IP officials engaged in trademark examination in their respective countries.
This course was designed to deepen understanding of examination guidelines and practice-related expertise, as well as to enhance required professional skills. Lectures on trademark legislation, examination guidelines, quality control, and experience/knowledge of substantive trademark examinations in Japan were presented, and participants were able to deepen their understanding through case studies and discussions based on actual applications.
Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:
"As trademark examination standards are being established at our IP office, I can make proposals based on new ideas gained through the course. The abundant information on non-traditional trademarks provided in the course will be particularly instrumental when our office engages in non-conventional trademarks in the future." "We do not have a policy on Similar Group Code in place, so we would like to consider introducing one by first consulting with the management of our office."
