The JPO conducted the “JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Patents” in hybrid format, meaning online and by inviting trainees, from August 23 to October 5, 2023. A total of 16 trainees from 9 countries completed the course, which was intended for IP lawyers, patent attorneys, and those engaged in patent practices in companies and universities.
The purpose of this course was to deepen the attendees’ understanding of patent practices, and to enhance their abilities as experts in IP rights. IP experts in Japan provided lectures on how to write patent specifications, as well as on licensing negotiations, dispute resolution, and utilization of patent information. Lectures were delivered in real time online, as well as in person, so as to create an interactive approach. Trainee comments regarding the course included the following:
“One session explained the patentability requirements in Japanese jurisdictions, focusing on the application process and how to determine novelty and inventive step. I've never done a comparison with prior art, so this is one of the things I am curious about and want to know more about. In addition, the lecturer showed us many case studies, which helped us understand the lecture better.”
“The lectures gave me important knowledge not only from a legal perspective, but also a business one. I understood that Japan not only has a legal department, but also an IP one, so I was also able to learn about procedures for licensing agreements from a business perspective. In addition, I gained knowledge about the different types of agreements for commercializing intellectual property, such as licenses, NDAs, and joint research (joint development), and I appreciated the lectures on the various provisions of the relevant contracts. For these reasons, the lecture was beneficial to my work.”
