JPO Conducts Training Course on Design Substantive Examination and Accession to the Hague Agreement

The JPO conducted the JPO/IPR Training Course on Design Substantive Examination and Accession to the Hague Agreement from January 16 - 23, 2024. A total of 21 participants from 12 countries and one organization attended the course, whose target participants were design examiners from the IP Offices of various countries—particularly those which have not yet joined the Hague Agreement.

The purposes of this course were to promote accession to the Hague Agreement, introduce the substantive design examination system, and improve the quality of examinations. During the course, JPO examiners shared their experiences of Japan’s accession to the Hague Agreement, and gave lectures on topics including examination practices, standards and operations.

The trainees expressed strong interest in accession to the Hague Agreement. Their comments regarding the course included the following:

“I understand the importance of the Hague Agreement, which will be an opportunity to improve our design system, encourage designs, generate more revenue, and contribute to our country's development.”

“It was informative and interesting (for us) to hear about Japan's experience in acceding to the Hague Agreement. I would like to use Japan's experience to help my country join the Hague Agreement.”
