In order to determine whether the application as filed sufficiently discloses the invention, it has to be considered whether the invention can be carried out using common general knowledge and the information given in the application. General technical literature and standard textbooks are clearly within common general knowledge, while a patent specification is normally not.
However, patent specifications may exceptionally be considered as forming part of common general knowledge where the invention is in a field of research such as certain fields of biotechnology, which field is so new that the relevant technical knowledge is not yet available from textbooks.
