Every year we celebrate World Intellectual Property (IP) Day on April 26, the date on which the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) entered into force in 1970. WIPO established this commemorative day in 2000, so this year marks the 24th time observing it.
Since 2001, World IP Day has been observed worldwide by holding a variety of events and activities to increase people's awareness and understanding of the important role that IP rights play in promoting innovations. This year is no exception, with public awareness-raising activities scheduled to be held in many parts of the world based on this year's theme of "IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity."
In celebrating World IP Day 2024, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) is highlighting the contributions it has made to WIPO, while emphasizing the cooperative relationship between itself and WIPO, as well as the SDGs-related initiatives undertaken by the JPO.
The JPO has enhanced its cooperative relationship with WIPO over the years through a wide variety of initiatives. Japan has made voluntary contributions to WIPO each year since 1987, based upon which it has operated a trust fund called the "Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT Japan IP Global)." During the 37 years since the fund was set up, Japan has contributed a total of CHF 100 million, and has provided support to more than 100 countries. The JPO has implemented a variety of assistance-related activities for developing and least-developed countries, for which it has welcomed more than 1,800 trainees from 62 countries and 4 regional organizations since 1987. These initiatives have included holding various workshops and seminars, sending more than 400 JPO experts to 41 countries, and supporting the digitalization and upgrading of the IT infrastructure at IP offices in those countries.
Through the FIT Japan IP Global, the JPO also supports SDG-related projects such as the promotion of environmental technology-matching in the Latin American region, support for indigenous women entrepreneurs, and assistance for young designers to utilize IP.
The WIPO Japan Office (WJO) (External link) was established in 2006 as an external office of WIPO. The WJO's functions include providing information on the significance and role of the IP system in Japan; liaising between WIPO and concerned ministries, agencies, courts, universities, and industry in Japan; and disseminating international application and registration systems for patents, trademarks, and designs under WIPO's jurisdiction. In addition, the WJO contributes to various SDG initiatives initiated by WIPO to address global issues, including WIPO GREEN (External link).
Furthermore, the WJO implements capacity-building for developing countries through IP Advantage (External link) and other funding programs via the FIT Japan IP Global, and also conducts research-based studies to promote utilization of the IP system.
Finally, in disseminating information on the IP system and international application/registration systems under WIPO's jurisdiction, the WJO conducts seminars and makes individual visits to users, and also provides various types of information and support to users in Japanese.
Through these public awareness campaigns, responses to global issues, and assistance-related initiatives using the FIT Japan IP Global, the JPO has been advancing its cooperative relationship with the WJO.
The JPO has launched a web page that provides the details of its cooperation with the WJO. We hope you will visit and take a look.

The JPO is implementing various initiatives to achieve the SDGs, including the following:
The JPO participates as a partner in the online platform WIPO GREEN (External link) to promote the utilization of green technologies, which is run by WIPO. The JPO will work together with WIPO to continuously strive to facilitate the spread of green technologies in the world.
The Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI) is a technologies inventory which gives a bird’s-eye view of technologies related to Green Transformation (GX) published by the JPO. Each item in the GXTI includes the patent search formulae to search patent documents.
We hope that GXTI, as a common asset useful for patent information analysis of GX related technologies, will contribute to the improvement of the social and economic values of enterprises and thereby promote innovations which solve various environmental issues.
Gender equality and women's empowerment are key themes of the SDGs. In August 2023, the JPO established a Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Team to serve as a cross-organizational taskforce comprised primarily of young female personnel. The team is working to turn the JPO into an organization that offers both job satisfaction and an enabling work environment for all members, with a commitment to pursuing diversity and inclusivity.
The JPO has also been actively participating in global initiatives to enhance diversity and inclusion by deepening cooperation with WIPO and other IP offices around the world. On March 8, 2024, International Women's Day, more than 70 IP Offices and IP organizations around the world, including the JPO, participated and adopted a joint message promoting women's empowerment.
Under the 2024 World IP Day theme of "IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity," the WIPO Japan Office will hold a commemorative event on April 26, 2024. This will consist of lectures by distinguished guests from various fields. JPO Commissioner Hamano will also deliver a speech at the event.
