JPO provided new examiners from MyIPO with examination practice training for JPO's inventive step standard

August 26, 2022

The Global Patent Academy (GPA) of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) conducted the online training for new patent examiners regarding examination practice to the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), as requested by MyIPO, for eight days in total, August 2 to 4, 8 to 10, 16 and 17.

Three GPA instructors from the JPO, who are patent examiners with extensive experience in patent examination practice, served as lecturers, and eight new patent examiners from MyIPO participated in the training.

In addition to live online lectures and discussions, the participants were given assignments outside of the lectures to deepen their understanding of patent examination practice, including prior art searches and the JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR(*1)) criteria for an inventive step.

New patent examiners from MyIPO are expected to carry vital roles as human resources leading the intellectual property domain in Malaysia by fully demonstrating their knowledge about examination practice obtained in this training.

The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practice to examiners in Malaysia and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japanese companies is expected, thereby supporting the development and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
