Mr. Hamano, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), delivered a keynote speech on the theme of “Charting our Future with IP” on September 6, 2022, during the annual intellectual property (IP) event “IP Week” hosted by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). In recent years, people from over 40 countries have attended IP Week, which serves as a forum where the global IP community can interact.
Commissioner Hamano introduced the JPO initiatives that led to “charting our future with IP”, including those for improving predictability in the examination of emerging technologies, as well as for solving social issues. Specifically, Commissioner Hamano introduced initiatives that have been introduced to improve predictability. These consisted of publishing patent examination case examples on AI-related inventions, and a manga-based version of examination guidelines for AI/IoT; as well as developing an examination environment for AI-related inventions. In addition, he introduced initiatives to solve social issues, which included the publication of the Green Transformation Technologies Inventory (GXTI), and the I-OPEN project that is scheduled to be reported at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
We will continue to actively send information beyond Japan’s borders as a means to enable IP stakeholders all over the world to learn more about the JPO's initiatives.
