JPO Provided IP VIET NAM New Patent Examiners with Examination Practice Training Programs

January 6, 2023

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) provided new patent examiners from the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IP VIET NAM), with the new examiner training program for patent examination practices via online for 8 days, in total, December 1 to 2, 5 to 6, 12 to 13 and 15 to 16, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The training program was requested by IP VIET NAM.

Three instructors of the Global Patent Academy (GPA) from the JPO, who are examiners with extensive experience in examination practice, served as lecturers, and 9 new patent examiners from IP VIET NAM participated in the training program. This training allowed 42 IP users outside of IP VIET NAM to attend the program.

Participants deepened their understanding of patent examination practices such as prior art searches and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria*1 for an inventive step, the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) and other relevant topics through discussions on tasks presented by the instructors, in addition to online live lectures and various group discussions.

The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practice to examiners in the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (Viet Nam) and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan’s companies is expected, thereby supporting the development and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
