The Japan Patent Office (JPO) provided examiners of Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam (IP Viet Nam) with a training program on patent examination practices for a total of eight days, from September 11 to 15 and 18 to 20, 2023. Based on the request from IP Viet Nam, the JPO provided this training program as a follow-up to the training course for new patent examiners which was conducted in FY2022.
From the JPO, two International Training Instructors of the Global Patent Academy (GPA) with extensive practical experience in patent examination served as instructors. The JPO instructors were dispatched to the face-to-face training site for the first time in four years. From IP Viet Nam, nine patent examiners participated in the program.
Participants deepened their understanding of patent examination practices such as prior art searches and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria*1 for an inventive step through discussions and assigned tasks. Participants commented, "the instructors delivered lectures in a dedicated and friendly manner. We believe that this program will be definitely beneficial to our future examination practices."
The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practices to examiners in Viet Nam and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan’s companies is expected, thereby supporting the development and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
