The Japan Patent Office (JPO) provided face-to-face Examination Practice Training Program for the Director General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) for a total of four days from November 6 to 9, 2023. The training covered examination practices in the fields of Mechatronics, Chemistry, and IoT.
In this program, three JPO International Training Instructors of the Global Patent Academy (GPA) with extensive practical experience in patent examination in the fields of Mechatronics, Chemistry, and IoT served as instructors, and eight DGIP examiners participated as trainees.
Through discussions and assigned tasks, the trainees deepened their understanding of patent examination practices including prior art searches according to the technical field and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria*1 for an inventive step. Some trainees commented that they were able to better understand as the explanation in the training was given using an actual motor.
The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practices to examiners in Indonesia and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan's companies is expected, thereby supporting the development and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
