JPO Provided DIP Patent Examiners with Face-to-Face Examination Practice Training Program

November 30, 2023

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) provided face-to-face Examination Practice Training Program for the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) Thailand for a total of five days from November 6 to 10, 2023. The training covered examination practices in the field of water treatment, as well as a follow-up of the training for new examiners provided in 2022.

In this program, three participants from the JPO, including International Training Instructors of The Global Patent Academy (GPA) with extensive practical experience in patent examination, served as instructors, and thirty-five patent examiners from the DIP participated as trainees.

Through discussions and assigned tasks, the trainees extended their understanding of patent examination practices including prior art searches and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria*1 for an inventive step.

The trainees commented that they were able to deepen the knowledge they gained in the last year’s training for new examiners. They also mentioned that the expertise they gained through this training will be useful for efficient patent examination in the future. The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practices to examiners in Thailand and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan’s companies is expected, thereby supporting the development, and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
