JPO Provided DIP Examiners with Face-to-Face Examination Practice Training Program

November 8, 2024

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) provided face-to-face Examination Practice Training Program for the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) Thailand for a total of five days from October 16 to 18 and 21 to 22, 2024. The training covered examination practices in the field of electrical engineering, as well as examination practices for new examiners.

In this program, three examiners from the JPO, including International Training Instructors of The Global Patent Academy (GPA) with extensive practical experience in patent examination, served as instructors, and thirty-seven patent examiners from the DIP participated.

Through discussions and assigned tasks, the participants extended their understanding of patent examination practices including prior art searches and JPO's Multi-Factor Reasoning (MFR) criteria*1 for an inventive step. Some participants commented that the instructors delivered their lectures in a simple and easily-understandable manner, which enabled the participants to enjoy the training. Others also mentioned that the instructors also explained examination practices for inventions of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, and that the participants were confident of enhancing their own examination capabilities.

The JPO will continue to provide cooperation in patent examination practices to examiners in Thailand and other emerging countries where further business expansion of Japan’s companies is expected, thereby supporting the development, and strengthening of examination systems in those countries.
