Report

On October 25, 2022, the JPO and Cambodian Ministry of Commerce co-hosted Follow-up Seminar in Phnom Penh.

Approximately 60 IP personnel from the government agencies, IP professionals from universities, research institutes, and law firms from Cambodia attended the seminar for JPO/IPR training course alumni.

On the theme of "Trademark Registration & IP Administrative Enforcement Mechanism", JPO, MOC, Japanese universities, independent administrative agencies, and international organizations gave lectures the seminar focusing on the Trademark Registration Procedure, IP Administrative Enforcement Mechanism, and Promoting Public Awareness of IP.

The Cambodian speakers explained that intellectual property protection efforts are being promoted under the Cambodian Trademark and Unfair Competition Law. In addition, they explained that MOC staff are actively participating in overseas trainings and meetings, and stated that efforts are being made to improve the knowledge of IP Office staff in promoting and raising awareness of IP in Cambodia.

These activities are expected to further improve the country’s IP environment.

The Japanese speakers introduced the JPO's measures to expedite trademark examination, such as the Fast Track Examination and the Accelerated Examination System. They also outlined the latest information on the trademark system, such as the electronic acceptance of Madrid applications that started in 2022; and explained the role of the Anti-Counterfeiting Office, which has been established by JPO as an anti-counterfeiting organization.

The Japanese speakers additionally introduced the basic ideas of the IP education baseline, aiming to promote IP education in an efficient and appropriate manner.

Through these initiatives, the JPO will contribute toward continuous, self-sustaining development and improvement of the IP environment in Cambodia.
