The Cooperation for facilitating Patent Grant (CPG) is a framework based on the agreement between the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and other foreign intellectual property (IP) offices. Under the CPG, when patent applications have been examined and granted at the JPO, patent rights will be granted also to corresponding applications filed in other contracting offices without conducting substantial examinations, whenever applicants request for such.
By using the CPG, applicants who are rights holders of patents registered at the JPO can acquire patent rights earlier for their same inventions at other IP offices ratifying the CPG agreement. Also, the CPG can reduce workloads in terms of the procedures involved with granting patent rights by offices in developing and emerging countries, whose examination systems are not yet fully developed.
From July 1, 2016, the JPO launched a CPG program with the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft (MIH) of Cambodia, which serves as the IP office in Cambodia, in charge of patents and designs.
And from November 1, 2016, the JPO launched a CPG program with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Laos, which serves as the IP office in LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC.
