Report

The Japan Patent Office(JPO) and Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand(DIP) co-hosted an online follow-up seminar on March 1, 2022.

This seminar, held for JPO/IPR training course alumni from Thailand, was attended by approximately 120 IP personnel from the DIP, as well as government agencies, private companies, patent and law firms, and IP professionals from universities and research institutes.

Under the theme “Build Back Better Through IP and Innovation”, speakers from the governments of Thailand and private companies of both countries gave lectures on government initiatives in the field of IP, covering topics such as digitization and public-private cooperation, and corporate activities that incorporate the use of IP.

In the lectures from the Thai side, the speaker introduced "Smart DIP" using IT at the DIP, as well as the initiatives on digitization and onlinezation (development of the online system) for the purpose of streamlining examinations and registrations of industrial property rights. In the explanation on public-private collaboration, the speaker explained the importance of IP in business, as well as issues occurring during collaborations between inventors and companies, along with the importance thereof.

Meanwhile, the speaker from the Japan side introduced the latest JPO initiatives and delivered a lecture on the Government of Japan’s IP strategy, including the "Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2021" that was formulated to revitalize the creation of innovations. In addition, the speaker explained the Japanese companies’ approach to research / technology development and IP strategy, as well as the impact of innovation on IP activities and cooperation with Thailand, which is closely involved in corporate activities.

In addition, the JPO collected information useful for business planning by holding an opinion exchange meeting with alumni on March 2, 2022. At the meeting, we asked for the attendees’ opinions and experiences on various matters including feedback on the training, initiatives they were involved with after the training, and how beneficial the training was for such purposes.

Through these initiatives, the JPO contributes toward continuous, self-sustaining development and improvement of the IP environment in Thailand.
