Examination Guidelines on Acquired Distinctiveness and Non-Traditional Trademarks in the Atlantic-Pacific Axis
FY2025 Follow-up Seminar in Brazil (Program)
On November 12, 2025, the JPO and the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) co-hosted a follow-up Seminar in Rio de Janeiro.
The seminar, themed "Examination Guidelines on Acquired Distinctiveness and Non-Traditional Trademarks in the Atlantic-Pacific Axis", was attended by approximately 80 intellectual property stakeholders from the INPI, law firms, and representatives from universities and research institutions.
This seminar was praised for its lively discussions and practical insights, as a regulatory change concerning ‘Acquired Distinctiveness’ in Brazil will come into effect on November 28, and the examination manual is currently being updated.
The seminar also commemorated the "Japan-Brazil Friendship Exchange Year". 2025 marks the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil, symbolizing the long-standing friendship and cooperative relationship between the two countries.
Through these initiatives, the JPO will contribute toward continuous, self-sustaining development and improvement of the IP environment in Brazil.
